Wyoming Horse / Livestock Bill of Sale Overview

Wyoming has one of the nation's strongest brand inspection programs, administered by the Wyoming Livestock Board. Brand inspections are mandatory for all cattle, horses, mules, and asses at change of ownership, transport, and slaughter. Wyoming Statutes Title 11 govern livestock brands, marks, and inspections. The Wyoming Livestock Board has law enforcement authority and employs brand inspectors and investigators throughout the state. A brand inspection certificate is the primary legal document proving ownership and right to sell.

Wyoming Brand Inspection Requirements

The Wyoming Livestock Board requires brand inspections for all cattle, horses, mules, and asses at every change of ownership, before any transport, at livestock markets, and at slaughter. Wyoming has one of the most rigorous brand inspection programs in the country. Brand registration is required for all livestock owners and must be renewed every 10 years. The Livestock Board has full law enforcement authority, and its investigators handle livestock theft cases. Wyoming brand inspectors are stationed throughout the state and are available for field inspections.

Wyoming Health & Veterinary Requirements

Wyoming requires a negative Coggins test within 12 months for equine change of ownership and events. Interstate imports require a CVI issued within 30 days and negative Coggins. Wyoming has specific cattle import requirements related to brucellosis due to the Greater Yellowstone Area brucellosis issue. Cattle from designated surveillance areas near Yellowstone require additional testing. The Wyoming State Veterinarian coordinates with federal agencies on wildlife-livestock disease interface issues.
