What Is a Tractor Bill of Sale?
A tractor bill of sale is a written record of the private transfer of a farm tractor from one party to another. Because most states do not title tractors the way they title cars, the bill of sale serves as the primary ownership document — the single piece of paper that tells a future buyer, a lender, an insurer, or a probate court who owned the machine, when, and for what price.
Farm tractor transactions span an enormous value range. A 1950s Ford 8N restoration project might change hands for $2,500, while a three-year-old John Deere 8R 340 with a duals package, GPS guidance, and a full ISOBUS suite can easily clear $350,000. In every case, the bill of sale must precisely identify the PIN, engine serial, hour meter reading, PTO configuration, hydraulic remotes (SCVs), and every implement or attachment included.
Unlike road vehicles, tractors are tied to specific implements that can represent a huge share of the total value. A $45,000 utility tractor may come with a $12,000 loader, a $6,000 rotary cutter, a $4,500 box blade, a $3,800 grapple, and a $2,400 pallet fork set. Each of these items should be individually listed with its own brand, model, and serial number so the buyer's title, the lender's collateral schedule, and the insurer's scheduled-equipment list all match.
Whether you are selling a hobby-farm sub-compact to a neighbor, buying a row-crop tractor from a retiring farmer, or transferring equipment between two LLCs in an estate settlement, the tractor bill of sale is the legal foundation for the deal.

How to Write a Tractor Bill of Sale
Identify the Parties
Full legal names of buyer and seller, mailing addresses, phone numbers. If either party is a farm LLC or corporation, list the entity's legal name, state of formation, and the signing officer's title.
Describe the Tractor
Brand, model, year, engine HP, PTO HP, transmission type, 2WD or MFWD, hour meter reading, and color. Note any cab, ROPS, A/C, radio, or loader-joystick features.
Record the PIN and Engine Serial
Write the tractor Product Identification Number from the PIN plate and the engine serial number from the block plate. Take a photo of each plate and attach copies to both parties' bill of sale.
List PTO, Hydraulics, and Remotes
Record the number of PTO speeds (540 / 540E / 1000), the number of SCVs (rear hydraulic remotes), and whether the loader, backhoe, or 3-point is included.
Itemize Implements and Attachments
List every implement separately — loader, bucket, grapple, forks, rotary cutter, box blade, tiller, post-hole digger, hay spear, 3-point hitch quick-connect — with brand, model, and serial.
State Price, Warranty, and Sign
Write the total price and allocate it if necessary across tractor and implements. State 'as-is' and disclose any known defects. Both parties sign and date; notarize if your lender requires it.

PTO & Implement Considerations
The PTO shaft is the heart of a tractor's usefulness. When drafting your bill of sale, pay special attention to the PTO configuration, the 3-point hitch category (Category 1, 2, or 3), the SCV count, and any quick-connect hydraulic couplers. Buyers who skip these details often find their new implements don't fit.
- 3-Point Hitch Category: Category 1 (compact), Category 2 (utility), Category 3 (row crop). Mismatched categories require adapter pins.
- PTO Speed: Record 540, 540E, 1000, or ground-drive. Implements are rated for specific speeds.
- SCV Count: Number of rear remote hydraulic pairs powers cylinders on loaders and implements.
- Quick-Attach Loader Plate: Skid-steer universal quick-attach, John Deere quick-park, or pin-on.
